There have been a few memorable slip-ups during live interviews and press conferences during which someone uttered a four-letter word or some other objectionable comment. But for Formula 1 star Max Verstappen, dropping the f-word during recent remarks seemed to generate a larger reaction than many similar incidents in the past.

Starting with a sanction

Almost immediately, Verstappen was slapped with a sanction from F1 governing body FIA. According to its ruling, he will be required to perform community service as a punitive measure for his foul-mouthed flub.

This marks the first time a driver has faced such a sanction based on the use of profanity.

It’s worth noting that Mohammed Ben Sulayem, the president of FIA, has made it a priority to clean up the mouths of F1 drivers. He issued a warning not too long before Verstappen received his punishment.

For his part, the driver seems to think the whole thing was blown out of proportion. He made it clear that he disagreed with the sanction and thinks it is a sign of bigger problems lurking beneath the surface of F1 racing.

Having a ripple effect

Several of Verstappen’s fellow drivers have come forward in his defense — including Lewis Hamilton, who advised the FIA to focus on other more pressing issues than an errant expletive.

And the man who received the sanction pointed out that previous incidents had been treated less harshly, primarily with warnings or small fines.

The whole situation is now clouding Verstappen’s view of the entire sport, he explained, suggesting that he no longer feels he can be himself.

“I think sometimes you get to a point in your career where maybe you want to do other stuff,” he said, noting that it might be “time for a change” after his contract ends in 2028.
