Los Angeles is one of the most populous cities in the U.S. and known around the world for its immeasurable contribution to the entertainment industry. But that pales in comparison to the attention it’ll be receiving over the next several years.

Planting the flag

Following the conclusion of the 2024 Paris Games, the Olympic flag arrived in L.A. to commemorate the city’s role in hosting the competition in four years. It marks the third time the Olympics will be held in the City of Angels, the latest being 40 years ago and the first a half century before that.

Things have changed a lot since then … and not always for the better. But there’s already planning underway to put on a show that caters to a global audience without disrupting the city’s already marginalized residents.

A few of the most pressing issues involve:

  • Improving infrastructure and public transit
  • Addressing a growing homelessness problem
  • Mitigating the impact of climate change

These and other concerns present quite a daunting challenge, but city leaders and Olympic organizers alike say they’re up to the task.

Repeating the past

L.A. City Council President Paul Krekorian, who was in Paris for the latest Olympics, says his city has a proven record of success.

“After witnessing the Paris Games, I am more excited and enthusiastic about the Games in L.A. than ever before,” he said. “L.A. is the only city in the world to host two financially successful Olympics. We will do it again.”

Clearly, not everyone is convinced. But David Simon, who served as the vice president of the 1984 Olympic organizing committee, explained: “The proof is in good planning, which we’ve had the past two Games. You can’t prove the naysayers wrong until the Games happen.”
