Shakespeare’s Juliet asked the immortal question: “What’s in a name?”

And centuries later, fantasy football commissioners are still striving to answer it. There’s a lot more to this popular pastime than drafts and stats, as anyone who has struggled to come up with the perfectly pithy name can attest.

But if it’s your first time as the commissioner of a fantasy league or you just want to come up with a catchier moniker, there are a few strategies you can use to come up with some creative contenders.

Pop culture

This is a pretty deep well from which to draw inspiration, particularly if most of the league’s managers are fans of a particular show, movie, or artist.

You could always go the superhero route with “The Avengers” or “Justice League.” There’s also the opportunity for a gridiron-related pun based on popular pop culture references, such as “Clash of the Tight Ends” or “Cloudy with a Chance of Footballs.”

Size matters

Another strategy involves capitalizing on the number of teams in your league. Choosing a name like “Eight is Enough” or “The Dirty Dozen” offers a little insight right off the bat into the size of the league.

Star power

If you’re still having some trouble coming up with the right name, just take a look at the names at the top of most fantasy football rosters. These are instantly recognizable references for just about anyone in your league and can often be easy to integrate into a memorable name. Something like “Queens-Burrow Bridge” or “Mahomes on the Range” will identify a key player who could take one of your league’s teams all the way.

No matter what you choose, make sure your managers all feel welcome and, above all else, have fun this season!
