Gamers frequently share a moment of acute anticipation prior to the release of a major new title … but few of those moments have lasted as long as the leadup to the yet-to-be-released game “Star Citizen.”

What is it?

If you’re not one of the many eager people eager to get your hands on this release from Cloud Imperium Games, let’s take a look at how everything that has brought the gaming industry to this point.

  • Crowdfunding for the game kicked off about 12 years ago
  • As of this writing, developers have raised nearly a quarter of a billion dollars
  • There’s still no firm date on the release of the preliminary “Star Citizen 1.0”

And it’s not just the delay in production that has some fans and skeptics alike voicing their concerns. News about expensive in-game purchases and worries that the game might never actually surface at all has fueled allegations that the entire thing is just a long-running scam.

Nevertheless, CIG insiders say the game is coming and it will be worth the wait.

A sneak peek

“Star Citizen Alpha 3.23” sparked a huge amount of buzz with its release, and many supporters of the project are holding out hope that the finished product will live up to the hype. There’s supposed to be big-name voices (like those of actors Mark Hamill and Gillian Anderson) and the company is teasing a forthcoming release of the “Alpha 4.0” version.

But there’s no denying the fact that things aren’t going as planned … and CIG exec Chris Roberts admitted as much recently.

After a series of layoffs and an abrupt relocation, he said: “The journey is longer and more difficult than I anticipated 11 ½ years ago, but the final destination is so much more exciting and fulfilling.”
