If you’ve been on social media much over the past couple of days, you’ve probably come across references to a “Senate sex tape.” But it’s easy to get caught up in speculation, so let’s try to answer a few key questions.

What was it?

News first broke on Friday when a report in The Spectator referenced a pornographic video allegedly recorded by a congressional staffer inside a Senate hearing room. The article described an individual “naked but for a jock strap” and positioned “on all fours, facing away from the camera.”

That story was followed by an even more explicit account in the conservative news site the Daily Caller, which also included a clip from the video in question, which had reportedly been “shared in a private group for gay men in politics.”

Who was it?

The rumor mill began operating in overdrive and one of the two men in the video was identified in multiple video accounts as Aidan Maese-Czeropski, an aide to Sen. Ben Cardin (D-MD).

On Saturday, Cardin — a long-time senator and current Foreign Relations Committee chairman — issued a terse statement confirming only that “Maese-Czeropski is no longer employed by the US Senate.”

For his part, Maese-Czeropski addressed the incident by asserting that he had been “attacked for how [he loves] to pursue a political agenda.”

Where was it?

The setting for the lewd video was a particularly notable aspect of the story, since it is unclear how the men gained access to an important hearing room within the Hart Senate Office Building. Members of the Judiciary Committee frequently use the location for momentous events, such as the confirmation of Supreme Court Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson.

The sexual act captured on the video appeared to have been performed right where Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) typically sits.
