The culture ministry attempts to 'preserve' the French language (which is in no danger of disappearing) and wants to help clean up the Anglicism in the French gaming community.
The culture ministry announced while speaking with the Agence France-Presse (AFP), however, it's up to government workers to enforce the banning of words like 'pro-gamer' and 'streamer.'
The concerns are said to come as an effort to help 'non-gamers' in France understand the gaming community, despite the gaming market in France seeing incredible growth (even during the pandemic).
The effort by the culture ministry seems to feel far over the top with a hint of nationalism, which has dark undertones. It's unlikely many French gamers were having difficulty communicating with 'non-gamers' concerning gaming or were degrading (a word used by language watchdog Academie Francaise in February regarding non-French communication) the French language.
Can we let gamers play and communicate as they see fit as long as they are not discriminating or causing any other harm?
