If you were a fan of the 2009 hit District 9, it's time to rejoice (unless you're one of those who hate all sequels and fun). Director Neil Blomkamp confirmed the news while speaking to Dexerto about his new game Off The Grid, a battle royale game pinned for release next year.

What news, you ask? Right, that is kind of important.

Blomkamp announced that a District 9 sequel is in the works, while the title or potential plot is under wraps; Blomkamp did say the follow-up is coming "within the near future."

According to previous interviews from Blomkamp, a sequel script was still in development in 2021 with District 9 co-writer Terri Tatchell and actor Sharlto Copley (Sharlto played Wikus van de Merwe in the original).

For those unfamiliar, District 9 mixed sci-fi and socio-political messages that served as a commentary on society. The film made $210.8 million at the box office, providing a great return on an estimated $30 million budget.

Critics also praised the film, meaning a sequel has a committed audience, but they come with high expectations for the franchise.
