Chief Executive Officer, Lars Wingefors of Embracer Group, says he sees potential in sequels, remakes, remasters, spinoffs, and transmedia projects for Tomb Raider.
Sounds pretty ambitious, right?
The most interesting part of his comments is the focus on transmedia. It's possible Embracer Group could use video game and film properties to tell a continuing narrative, which could be risky, but also bear fruit if the strategy works out to plan.
According to reports, Tomb Raider has sold 88 million units (not to mention box office revenue) for its three films. Square Enix's desire to sell Tomb Raider, Deus Ex, Thief, and Legacy of Kain could result in Embracer Group cashing in, especially on the Tomb Raider franchise that seems to be only growing in recent years. The reboot series of Tomb Raider (2013), Rise of the Tomb Raider (2015), and Shadow of the Tomb Raider (2018) brought an injection into the franchise that should lead it into the future.
